Picking the Perfect Frame

I get asked "what frame should I get for my moon?" a lot, so I put together a guide for how best to pick your perfect frame.

Firstly, my artwork comes on paper measuring 30.5cm x 23cm (12" x 9"). I've included an image below for anyone, like myself, who works better with visuals:

When looking to purchase a frame for your artwork, you need to choose a frame larger than these measurements in height and width. You can purchase a frame that is the exact size as the artwork, but I personally think going larger than the artwork makes it feel more sophisticated.

I'm going to suggest there are two standard ways to frame your artwork: in a frame on top of a piece of construction paper or wallpaper, or in a frame under a mat. I've included an example of each below:

I find that the most questions I get is when it comes to frames with mats, and I get it, it can be tough to get your head around what sized mats will best suit your artwork.

Again, because I work best with a visual, below is how I would suggest picking the size of mat - the cut-out in the mat needs to measure slightly smaller than your piece of artwork (see below). This ensures there will be no under-lap or gap between your artwork and the mat.

TIP: when I'm looking for a frame, sometimes I'll actually bring the piece of artwork to a store. That way I don't have to use my brain and can quickly see if it'll work or not.

A few customers have had their artwork custom framed, which guarantees your artwork will fit perfectly, and from there you can choose any sort of frame that will both match your painting and the style of your home.

My one piece of advice is to not be afraid to go bigger! Small frames tend to look dinky. Give your art some space

Some examples of standard pre-matted frames that my artwork will work in are:

I personally prefer to thrift my picture frames, but that can be very hit-and-miss. Good luck! And don't be afraid to go big.
